Motoring can be a very expensive thing to do. Sure, there are cheap driving lessons, but there are many other costs. Insurance can be very expensive. Sure, when you're aged 40 and have many years of driving experience under your belt it is very cheap, but it is not uncommon for a 16 year old driver to be given an insurance premium of £1600. As insurance is compulsory, it is a cost nobody can avoid.

Another high cost is fuel. With fuel prices rising, it is only going get worse. Fuel costs make motoring very expensive, as many of the luxury cars consume large amounts of petrol. The UK has some of the highest fuel prices in the world. The cost of fuel here is more than the rest of Europe, and more than double than that in the USA and Canada.

However, there is a way to reduce the costs of both insurance and petrol: buy a moped. Insurance for a moped is significantly lower than the premium for a car, and a moped will use alot less fuel than a car would. However, mopeds are only really popular among teenagers, as it is simply not practical for many people. It is difficult to imagine a 60 year old on a moped. Also, it is impossible to use a moped for shopping.

Before a prospective teenage driver decides to take up driving, they should consider whether they really need to. Could they make do with walking? Or perhaps, they could make do with public transport. Teenagers should work out: 1) Whether they can afford to drive 2) Whether they need to drive 3) Whether any alternatives would work out to be cheaper. Of course, it will all depend on the person's situation - somebody living in central London would be unlikely to need a car whilst somebody living in the middle of the countryside would have a much greater need.

In conclusion, motoring is a very expensive. With the cost of the car, the insurance premium, taxes and fuel prices, many people are now making do without, and many people simply cannot afford to drive.
